INHS Receives CDC Full Recognition for Group Lifestyle Balance Program
In 2018, INHS received CDC Full Recognition for our Group Lifestyle Balance Program. This designation is reserved for quality, evidence-based programs that have proved their program is effective in helping participants prevent type 2 diabetes. We are the only organization in Spokane to achieve this status.
The Group Lifestyle Balance Program is a year-long program that can help you lose weight by focusing on healthy eating, increasing activity levels and offering the support of a lifestyle health coach. By actively participating, you decrease the chance of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 58%. This is especially important as more and more people are being diagnosed with prediabetes, a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 86 million American adults have prediabetes (roughly one in three adults), and most don't even know it (nine of 10 people to be exact!). Without intervention, 25% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes in just three to five years. Think you may be at risk for prediabetes? Here are some risk factors:
- Being overweight or obese
- Having high blood pressure
- Having high triglycerides, a low HDL cholesterol level, or both
- Having a sister, brother, mother or father with diabetes
- Being a woman who has had gestational diabetes during pregnancy
- Being physically inactive
